Marissa Carters Top Tips - How to Get a Natural Tan

By: Niamh, 24 May 2012

Regular readers will know that Beautycouture.ie aren’t the biggest fans of tan and that we have nightmares about using fake tan and ending up looking Lauren Goodger from TOWIE or Katie Price. *Shudder*

But according to beauty guru Marissa Carter of Carter Beauty, the days of that nasty tango tan are over. She says ‘The biggest trend in tanning right now is the ‘pale fashion tan’ or the ‘au-tan’, think Katy Perry not Lindsay Lohan’. It’s no longer cool to permanently look like you’ve just jetted back from a 5 star luxury holiday and a much more dignified tan and natural tan has been spotted on the red carpet and fashion runways this year.’

We like the sound of that, because while we do love being pale princess, looking like Mr Burns aint’ a good look either, so a natural tan is ideal but how do you make sure you don’t end up looking like said tango gals?

According to Marissa: ‘Everyone wants to have a radiant glow that seems like it comes from within. However, two of the biggest tanning faux pas when making the transition from Spring to Summer are a lack of skin preparation and going too quickly from pale to tanned. Make sure to do it gradually and no-one will suspect that you’ve been faking it. Also invest time in prepping skin before hand to ensure that self tan has an even base.’

Good advice Marissa, and here’s her top 4 tan rules for getting the look just right.

1. Prep Skin

Patches of old, dead skin will absorb the tan which can lead to spots and streaks. To ensure an even tan, dry-brush before you shower or use an exfoliating mitt with an oil-free body wash to get rid of any dead skin.

2. Be Bare

After you shower stay away from any sprays or deodorants as the spray tan can turn your skin a green-grey colour when the tan hits your deodorant. A spray tan works best when it’s applied on dry, freshly cleaned and exfoliated skin so avoid wearing any essential oils, perfume or body lotions.

3. Vaseline is Your Friend

If you suffer from dark circles around your eyes, apply Vaseline to the area before getting sprayed. This will act as a barrier to the tan and means the skin around your eyes won't darken further. If you have fair eyebrows, apply some Vaseline through them too so the tan doesn't make them go orange.

4. Get Your Timing Right

Waxing, threading or tweezing should all be done at least 24 hours before a spray tan. Hair removal that tears hair out of the follicle can leave the follicles open which means the tan can pool creating tiny dark spots which can cause an uneven colour.

Carter Beauty use their own formulation and will assess your own skin tone to make sure the tan matches your skin and there isn’t a tango tan in sight. Made in Ireland the Carter Beauty tan comes in 3 shades-Light, medium and dark- 8, 10 & 12% DHA respectively.
